2007 Guide to E85 Ethanol Vehicles

Cornfields Main

Ethanol has been getting a lot of attention recently. Why? It’s an alternative fuel that offers many of the environmental and energy independence benefits that lawmakers and consumers demand...and it’s available right now.

This renewable fuel reduces tailpipe emissions and doesn’t add to the atmosphere’s net amount of carbon dioxide. Importantly, using ethanol also supports U.S. farmers – who grow the corn from which most of our ethanol today is derived – rather than foreign oil cartels. That’s a real plus for America’s balance of trade and a step in the right direction toward energy self-sufficiency…a rather long road at present because of the country’s substantial dependence on imported oil.

There’s a promising future ahead for ethanol fuel since it can also be produced from biomass sources like fast-growing woody grasses, and even waste material like corn husks. Producing this so-called cellulosic ethanol can’t be done in a cost-effective way yet, but we’re clearly on our way and improvements continue to come that should allow reaching that goal. Want to know more? Reference the articles “Bumper Crop” and "Ethanol or Gas" on this site

Along with its benefits, ethanol also has its challenges: It’s less energy dense than gasoline, which means fuel economy is reduced by 25 to 30 percent. Plus, ethanol filling stations are currently sparse so locating a station carrying ethanol near you may be a problem (check www.e85fuel.com for the nearest one). Obviously, you’re an E85 ethanol candidate only if there’s a convenient refueling opportunity in your area.

Today, there are 30 different 2007 model flexible-fuel vehicles being sold by Buick, Chevrolet, Chrysler, Dodge, Ford, GMC, Jeep, Lincoln, Mercedes-Benz, Mercury, Nissan, and Saturn. Each of the vehicles listed in this guide is capable of running on E85 – a mix of 85 percent ethanol and 15 percent gasoline – or any combination of gas and E85 in the same tank.

If you find that some of the vehicles in this guide are appealing to your sense of environmental or patriotic mission, then let us assure you that their operation is seamless and they do represent great choices. After all, they allow you to drive on renewable ethanol when this fuel is available, or gasoline when it’s not. Do understand that only models with specific engines are flexible-fuel capable, and that not all may be available in every state. Even though flexible-fuel E85 ethanol vehicles are gaining momentum, they are still clearly a work in progress.
