DaimlerChrysler to Field Hybrids?

Reports are surfacing that DaimlerChrysler may soon join the growing number of automakers offering hybrid electric vehicles to U.S. customers. Gasoline-electric versions of some models within the Chrysler Group of DaimlerChrysler, including vehicles under the Chrysler, Dodge, and Jeep brand names, are a possibility that might come to market as soon as 2006.

So far, DaimlerChrysler's response to consumer and regulatory pressure for improved gas mileage has been limited to diesel engines, demonstrated by the introduction of the Jeep Liberty CRD and Mercedes-Benz E320 CDI to American highways. While 100 Dodge Ram pickups with diesel-electric hybrid power will be sold to fleets in the coming months, this represents a tiny fraction of the increasingly large hybrid vehicle market.
