More Fleets Turning to Hybrids

It's a sign of the times that a growing number of public and private fleets are turning to more fuel-efficient hybrids to replace existing fleet vehicles. One recent example is W&M Construction of Stamford, Connecticut, which is converting its entire fleet of Dodge Ram pickups and Durangos to Ford Escape Hybrids, a move to save fuel and promote more environmentally friendly technologies. According to the company, the decision to lease hybrids was strongly influenced by its recent involvement in sustainable design projects and Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) rated work, and by its ownership's commitment to improving the environment. The Escape Hybrid was said to be an ideal choice because of its high stance and all-wheel-drive capability, both necessary for driving around construction sites.

 

The construction firm has taken delivery of its first six Escape Hybrids on the way to replacing all 22 vehicles in the company fleet. These six vehicles alone are expected to drive about 100,000 miles in their first 12 months with the firm, resulting in substantial reductions in fuel use along with lower C02 and tailpipe emissions.
