Solar Dragsters Set World Records

Solar dragsters that recently competed in the Third Annual Solar Drag Race in Wenatchee, Washington demonstrated the power of the sun without the use of any other propulsion aid. Unlike other solar events, this one requires the racers to operate on solar energy only without batteries or other storage devices. Entries from Open, College, and High School divisions competed on the 1/4 kilometer course, reaching speeds over 50 mph over the 820 feet of pavement.

South Whidbey High school set a new world record, while Brooks Solar also set a world record and placed second in its division. Republic Middle School's entry (pictured here) won the high school division while Central Washington University claimed the college division, both earning a $1,000 scholarship from race sponsor REC-Silicon.
