UBC Wins Supermileage Event

The University of British Columbia has won this year's Society of Automotive Engineers Supermileage Competition, achieving a record 1747 mpg with the team's eco-friendly vehicle. This effort represents a notable improvement from the university's third place finish last year, in which its entry achieved 927 miles per gallon.

British Columbia edged out 22 other universities to take the title, with California State University, Los Angeles and Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology of Indiana taking second and third place, respectively. Ecole Technologie Superior of Montreal earned a close win over British Columbia in the category of engineering design. In the high school competition, Evansville Matre Dei came out on top with 1352 miles per gallon, edging out runner-up Winamac, whose team won first place in design. Last year's winner, Homestead, finished third.

The Supermileage competition was conceived by the Society of Automotive Engineers to provide students focused on engineering, technology, and other disciplines with a challenging design project. The goal is to develop and construct a single-person vehicle that can achieve the highest possible fuel economy. The ultra-lightweight vehicles are powered by small four-cycle Briggs & Stratton engines.
