VW Warranty OK for B5 Biodiesel

Volkswagen will now extend warranty protection for the use of low blends of biodiesel fuel in all of its U.S. market diesel powered automobiles. The warranty protection, which covers biodiesel blends of up to 5 percent (B5), marks a significant milestone in the development of a national market for biofuels. Volkswagen's commitment to accept B5 in the U.S., as it has in Europe for many years, comes after a year of extensive biodiesel testing and development in cooperation with Archer Daniels Midland Company (ADM).

Volkswagen sees biodiesel as a key element in its long range fuel strategy, which relies on efficient, clean diesel technology and an increasingly broad portfolio of renewable fuels. Biodiesel can be made from any fat or vegetable oil, used in pure or blended form in diesel engines with few or no modifications, and reduces emissions of particulate matter, unburned hydrocarbons, and carbon monoxide. Volkswagen and ADM are now focused on jointly developing and demonstrating the advantages of higher biodiesel blends such as B20, a blend of 20% biodiesel and 80% petroleum diesel fuel.
