Dodge Sprinter Plug-In Hybrid

Ford and GM aren’t the only automakers making news in the plug-in hybrid realm. Now, DaimlerChrysler says it’s committed to expanding its concept plug-in hybrid program to include the all-new 2007 Dodge Sprinter, with up to 20 of these plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHEVs) placed in service here over the next year. This follows initial fleet testing of four Sprinter PHEVs based on the previous generation Sprinter model.

Battery development is said to be key to the success of DaimlerChrysler plug-in hybrids, mirroring comments made by GM at the Chevrolet Volt plug-in hybrid concept’s unveiling in Detroit this past January. “For plug-in hybrid technology to move forward, a dramatic leap in battery technology is necessary,” says one Chrysler Group executive, adding that the company expects fleet trials will yield important information on the potential that lithium-ion batteries have for PHEVs. The Sprinter PHEV is well-suited for stop-and-go fleet use with a 20 mile all-electric range available.
