Prius Requires Software Fix
 Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A. is launching a Special Service Campaign – read that “voluntary recall” – involving certain 2004 and early 2005 model year Prius sedans sold in the U.S. This is in response to an issue that could occur with the program logic in the Prius’ Electronic Control Module (ECM) system, prompting warning lights to illuminate and causing the vehicle to enter a "fail-safe" mode. While this mode allows only limited operation with the electric motor, Toyota says the electrically-powered brake and steering operation will continue to function normally and the electric motor will provide sufficient power to allow the vehicle to be pulled over and away from traffic. Once stopped, the automaker says a driver may be able to restart the gasoline engine by pushing the start button. About 75,000 Prius hybrids are affected.
The fix: Toyota will reprogram the ECM system at no charge and, in certain vehicles, apply a special dielectric grease to a connector for the transaxle that may cause a similar condition. Prius owners with questions should contact the Toyota Customer Experience Center at (800) 331-4331.
