The Petroleum Gap Widens

Since 1989, the transportation sector in the U.S. alone has used more petroleum than the country produces. How serious is this? Current projections indicate that by the year 2030, America’s transportation sector will consume nearly twice as much petroleum as the U.S. produces. The graph shown here illustrates how the disparity has grown over the years. Data is provided by the U.S. Department of Energy’s Energy Information Administration and Oak Ridge National Laboratory.
