ZAP's New Lotus-Based Electric
ZAP, a California-based developer and distributor of alternative fuel vehicles, has chosen a platform designed by Lotus Engineering to form the basis for an advanced electric-powered crossover vehicle. The so-called ZAP-X will utilize the platform and body structure design that Lotus debuted at last year’s Geneva Auto Show in the APX concept vehicle (pictured). The plans are certainly ambitious: All-wheel drive from in-hub electric motors delivering a total of 644 horsepower, a theoretical top speed of 155 mph, a range of up to 350 miles, and a rapid 10-minute recharge time. ZAP hasn’t indicated when a vehicle with such impressive stats will be available to buy, or how much it will cost.
The APX concept was designed to showcase Lotus Engineering's Versatile Vehicle Architecture technology, combining lightweight aluminum construction with exceptionally strong and stiff structural rigidity, as well as lower manufacturing investment requirements – ideal for lower-volume niche products. In the ZAP-X, the concept’s conventional V-6 engine will be replaced by four in-hub electric motors. The battery type has not yet been specified, but ZAP does say an auxiliary power unit is planned to extend the range beyond 350 miles.
